£923m Cable Factory Proposed for Port of Tyne in Major Jobs Boost for Region
LS Eco Advanced Cables (LSEAC) has announced plans to develop a £923 million high-voltage cable manufacturing site at the Port of Tyne, a project expected to generate around 500 direct jobs.
The facility will support the UK's shift to renewable energy by producing subsea cables that transport electricity from offshore wind farms to the national grid. Although the project is still in its early planning stages, it has the potential to create over 1,000 jobs throughout its supply chain. If approved, it would firmly position the North East as a major hub in the UK’s clean energy infrastructure. A five-week public consultation is underway, running from 14 May to 18 June. This is a chance for residents, local businesses, and community groups to voice their opinions and help shape the proposal before a formal planning application is submitted to South Tyneside Council later this year. Sangdon Lee, Director at LSEAC, commented: “As the UK accelerates its move toward low-carbon energy, the demand for supporting infrastructure is greater than ever. We’re proud to put forward this joint venture to build a world-class subsea cable facility. But it’s crucial that the project reflects the needs and interests of the local community. That’s why we’re inviting everyone to share their feedback during the consultation period.”
